What kinds of things does a chiropractor treat?

There are conditions of the musculoskeletal system in people of all ages. Most of the time people experience some functional loss while doing an activity. Commonly this is accompanied by pain and a restriction in motion. Some examples include:

Who needs chiropractic care?

People come to chiropractors for different reasons. Some come looking for relief of pain and injuries, others come looking for wellness. Many different types of people seek chiropractic care.

What does a chiropractor do?

Doctors of Chiropractic use their hands to assess your spine and all other joints in your body looking for areas that are not moving properly. Once these areas are located the chiropractor applies an adjustment. In addition to adjustments, techniques such as myofascial release allow chiropractors to relax trigger points/tight muscles and stretch out areas of adhesion/scar tissue in the muscle.

What should I expect on my first visit?

The first visit will take longer than any visits to follow. The doctor will ask you detailed questions about your complaint and then perform a thorough exam to determine what exactly is causing your pain. The doctor will then discuss the findings and your options for care.

What is an adjustment?

An adjustment is the appropriate pressure applied with the doctor's hands in the restricted areas restoring proper motion of the joint. The adjustment usually does not hurt, however, if you have tenderness in the area or the joint is very restricted, you may experience a brief moment of discomfort or surprise. Some patients can develop soreness after an adjustment lasting 12-24 hours. This is because the adjustment stretches tight muscles and can break up adhesions or scar tissue formed by the body to stabilize the injured joint. Although stabilizing a joint sounds like it is helpful, over the long term it forms adhesions that limit function. Breaking these adhesion is a good thing and allows the joint to start functioning properly. The soreness is often compared to the feeling of working out too much.
